This is very good, thank you! Lots of helpful lessons here and I'll be coming back to this to see how things are going (and what might need changing).

Thank you for this writeup!

I've been doing developer marketing for 10 years, and I still discover new things that sometimes may work.

My most recent learning is that those interactive product videos that make the page heavy, yeah, well they also tend to work great for SEO and have a higher chance of keeping a user on page.

"No one has figured out how to improve your visibility on AI platforms (AKA "generative engine optimization") yet." Totally agree. I’d add that no one’s figured out how to reliably track visibility on AI platforms either, and I'm curious how you guys are handling it/reporting on it.

There's a new AEO/GEO/whatever-you-wanna-call-it-O tool being release every single day, each one promising magical insights into metrics like visibility % and LLM ranking averages (I follow this directory to keep tabs on new launches https://www.aeotools.space/). In my opinion, everyone’s racing to crack it, but no one’s actually landed (yet). Most tools are still heavily probabilistic, relying on synthetic prompts and modeling; at best, you’re getting some directional insights sprinkled with hopes and dreams, not reliable data.

Right now, IMO old-school proxies are still useful (e.g. looking at session duration from LLM referrers, breaking down which landing pages are getting picked up, and tracking what types of content are cited most so you can reverse-engineer the format or structure across other pieces of content, or even running prompt checks to gauge brand visibility and sentiment). Until OpenAI, Perplexity, and the others roll out their version of AdWords, I believe we’re all just gonna have to sit tight and squint at the data for a little while longer

Yup, we have been testing out an AEO tool and are looking at what Ahrefs is doing, but agree that it will probably need to wait until the LLM providers have an ad platform to get real details.
